Having your first period can be a troublesome experience, particularly if you don’t have an adult female to guide you on what to do. It is natural to feel uncomfortable, but there is no reason to worry. In here, we address some common questions asked by girls who have their periods for the first time.
1. Is having your first period before 13 normal?
Yes, the average age actually is 12, but it differs from one girl to another. There are a few cases where girls have theirs as early as nine or eight, while there are those who have theirs very late.
2. What are the common physical changes that girls should expect when they get their periods?
Girls’ bodies start to change when they get their periods. Common changes are: more developed breasts; hips will start to widen; some weight gain; and body hairs will start to appear.
3. Are irregular periods something to be worried about?
If you’re just starting your period, it is normal to be irregular. The first year or two can see you having a period one month and missing it on the next two or three months.
4. Are tampons better than sanitary pads?
It differs from one girl to another. The good thing about tampons is that it allows you more mobility. However, if you’re not familiar with using tampons, it could be uncomfortable. Get instructions from a doctor or from an adult female in your family.
