Whiskey is actually the Irish name for “whisky”, which is the name the Scots preferred to use. In present times, however, the names are used more interchangeably, and very few people even remember the difference. Scottish Whiskey is considered the authentic drink though the Irish claim to have invented the popular spirit. Now we have whiskey made all over the world, American, Canadian, Scottish and of course Irish all make whiskeys.

There are two distinct varieties of whiskey, single malt and grain distilled. Single malts are made from just barley, where grain distilled are a mix of grains. Single malts are good for enjoying straight, and grain distilled are more suited for whiskey blends. Of course another popular way to consume whiskey is in a cocktail. Below are some favorites and classic cocktail recipes, all designed to serve one, however they can easily be scaled up to serve a crowd. Make one, or throw a whiskey tasting party and have guests pick their favorites, either way you are bound to have a ton of fun.

Popular Whiskey Cocktail Recipes

Irish Coffee

Serves one

2 ½ ounces Coffee, hot 1 ½ ounces Irish Whiskey 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 oz whipping cream, or whipped topping 1. Combine first three ingredients in a large mug. 2. Stir to combine 3. Top with whipped cream

Lynchburg Lemonade

Serves one 1 oz Whiskey ½ ounce triple sec 1 oz sweet and sour Ice to fill glass Lemon-lime soda 1. Fill your Collins glass with ice 2. Add in the first three ingredients 3. Top with soda and stir

Blood and Sand

Serves one

3/4 oz Scotch whiskey 3/4 oz cherry brandy 3/4 oz sweet vermouth 3/4 oz orange juice Orange slice for garnish 1. Fill a shaker with ice 2. Combine all ingredients, except garnish 3. Shake well and strain into glasses 4. Add garnish

Washington Apple

Serves one

1 oz Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey 1 oz sour apple schnapps 1 oz cranberry juice Apple slices for garnish 1. Fill shaker with ice. 2. Combine all ingredients in shaker. 3. Shake well 4. Strain into glasses and garnish
